The conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians could hardly be described as "security v struggle" as Martin Guenzel (letter 18/08) espouses. In 1988, President Arafat acknowledged Israel's terms for peace forgoing 78% of historical Palestine and accepting a state on the remaining 22%.
Twenty years on, Israel still has not budged one inch in ending its illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories, including Gaza which was evacuated in 2005, and then locked-down the very next day.
Marwan Barghouti's only crime is that he is seen as a strong leader of the leader of the helpless Palestinians, and was thus imprisoned, in the same way Arafat was in the last months of his life.
At some point, Israel will have to come to terms with the fact that the steadfastness of the Palestinians living under occupation and in the Diaspora can never be crushed. When this epiphany finally occurs, a truly just peace can be shared by Israelis and Palestinians.
