Israel has approved the release of 200 of the 11,000 Palestinian prisoners
it holds. About half of these prisoners are political prisoners not involved
in any violent attacks on Israel but vehemently against the illegal
occupation of their land and people. There are 500 classed as
"administrative detainees", who are "legally" held without charge or trial
for renewable six-month terms, since in the occupied territories a system of
apartheid exists whereby the Palestinians are ruled by Israel's occupier
laws and regulations, which deny Palestinian equal rights under the law. The
torture of Palestinian prisoners is also "legalised" and has been documented
by human rights groups as well as the incarceration of 300 children. Under
international law, Israel's occupation is illegal and its practices under
that occupation amount to war crimes, yet we continue to state that Israel
is the only democracy in the Middle East.
