Jason Koutsakis' report on the Palestinian set to lose his home in occupied
East Jerusalem is sadly only one of many stories that mostly never reach the
mainstream media. Since its illegal occupation began in 1967 of the West
Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, Israel has demolished 18,000 Palestinian
homes and has used its occupier laws to deny Palestinians building permits
for their natural growth. Meanwhile there are now an estimated 450,000
illegal Jewish settlers taking over as much land and resources in the
occupied Palestinian territories as they can with the full backing of the
Israeli government.
This is in defiance of international law and is a clear indication that
Israel wants the land devoid of Palestinians rather than a peaceful
coexistence with the Palestinians who have inhabited the land for
generations. This is slow ethnic cleansing and typifies Israel's behaviour
towards the Palestinians that has gone unchecked for decades. While the
Israeli courts might uphold the settlers claims, the international court of
justice has already ruled that the wall being built on occupied Palestinian
land is an illegal structure, and so too would it find all the illegal
settlements that Israel is building to displace the Palestinians from their
land. And where does our government stand on this issue?
